Modern tennis shoes provide better grip, support, and durability, helping players to move swiftly and reduce the risk of injury. This change has contributed to the consistency and speed of the game, allowing for a more dynamic style of play. Originally made from cloth and stuffed with wool or hair, modern tennis balls are constructed with a hollow rubber core and a felt covering. Whether played on grass, clay, or hard courts, the game continues to captivate audiences with its blend of physical prowess and strategic brilliance. The tournament concludes the Grand Slam season and is a favorite among fans for its energetic and lively environment.

The popularity of tennis at the end of the 19th century is evidenced by the fact that in 1896 it was included in the program of the First Modern Olympic Games along with eight other sports. In 1907, the first All-Russian lawn tennis competition was held, which was won by Georgy Bray, and in 1908, the All-Russian Union of Lawn Tennis Clubs was founded, the main governing body of Russian tennis until 1918. Future Trends in Tennis

  • The Tennis Court Oath, or “Serment du Jeu de Paume” in French, was a critical event during the early stages of the French Revolution.
  • In 1873, Major Walter Clopton Wingfield invented “Sphairistikè,” laying the groundwork for “lawn tennis.” Four years later, in 1877, the first Wimbledon tournament was organized.
  • The sport continues to evolve, with innovations in training, equipment, and officiating ensuring its growth and accessibility.
  • The journey begins with a fascinating early form known as “Jeu de Paume.” This ancient game, which translates to “game of palm,” has its roots deeply embedded in medieval France.
  • Could it be that the king or queen’s fondness for Jeu de Paume inadvertently spread its popularity among common folk?

Today’s courts measure a standard 78 feet long, but in the early days courts were 90 yards long, with 45 yards per side. Another theory is that the scoring system was created in reference to the number of yards the ball traveled. For every point scored, the hand was moved to the next quarter (15, 30, 45).
Professional tennis players inevitably began to emerge, they played exclusive games and earned money from their performances. Rackets only joined the fray in the 16th century and until the late 19th century it was almost exclusively an indoor game. A former cavalry officer, Wingfield is largely considered a visionary for bringing the game to the outdoors – to be played on the lawns of Victorian England. Its vibrant and unique experience, complete with a tightly strung racket and the odd grunt, has, however, evolved over the centuries. He called the game ‘Sphairistike,’ which is Greek for “playing ball.” It was played by rich English people on Manor House lawn. English King Henry VIII built a tennis court at Hampton Court Palace.

Jeu de Paume: The Medieval Beginning

By 1500, a wooden frame racquet laced with sheep gut was in common use, together with a cork ball weighing approximately three ounces. The Davis Cup

While most sports keep the scoring system simple, tennis… not so much. Over time, the game spread and evolved throughout Europe and beyond. Tennis dates back to 12th century France when it was played in the form of a handball game called ‘paume’ or palm. Padel is a similar sport typically played in doubles on an enclosed court about half the size of a tennis court. This creates a service box of 10 × 22 feet (3.04 × 6.70 m).
